The Tucson Guitar Society hosts its free community musical event on Thursday, June 7, from 6:30 to 8:p.m. at the Woods Library.

Playing this month are UA doctoral candidates Steven J. Lerman and Andrés Pantoja, recent graduate Graesyn Spiers, as well as the young García brothers, each performing about 20 minutes. The Woods Memorial Library is at 3455 N. First Avenue, between Prince and Fort Lowell.

UA Bolton Guitar Studies Program doctoral candidate Steven J. Lernman has won the 29th annual Frances Walton Competition in Seattle. He was the only guitarist selected among the 15 finalists, and he competed against outstanding performers from around the world. If that wasn’t enough, Kevin Callahan, who composed the finale piece that Steve played, came out to watch. His work, "Red Fantasy," was written for Odair Assad, and Steve has made it a signature of his repertoire as well. Steve is even more delighted because Kevin brought him a lot of new music. The competition prize package includes a week of concerts in September. Bravo to Steve!
