School of Music

The University of Arizona School of Music offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in performance, composition, conducting, music education, ethnomusicology, and musicology, along with an online BA in Music. Known for its world-class guitar program and nationally recognized strengths in piano, cello, choral, and opera, the school also features the Pride of Arizona Marching Band, its largest ensemble and recent recipient of the prestigious Sudler Trophy. With distinguished faculty, extensive performance opportunities, and strong community partnerships, the school prepares students for dynamic careers as performers, educators, composers, and scholars.

Classical guitarist Facundo Martinez shares his story of coming to the University of Arizona from his home country of Argentina and why he chose the School of Music and its renowned Bolton Guitar Studies program, where he is a graduate teaching assistant.
 
Led by professor Tom Patterson, the Bolton Guitar Studies program at the University of Arizona is one of the top guitar programs in the nation. Graduate and undergraduate students from around the world study and teach in Tucson, placing in some of the top U.S. and international competitions. The program hosts acclaimed artists David Russell, Sergio and Odair Assad as artists in residence who are able to provide concerts and master classes to our talented guitar majors.

From Argentina to Arizona, Facundo Martinez | School of Music

Brian Lopez performs at the Center for Creative Photography to kick off “8-Track,” a new music series from Arizona Arts Live.

Lopez is an acclaimed singer/songwriter from Tucson, Arizona. A classically trained guitarist, Lopez has toured as a solo artist, with his psychedelic cumbia/rock band XIXA, and as a sideman for internationally renowned artists Calexico, KT Tunstall, Giant Sand, Orkesta Mendoza, Mexican Institute of Sound and more. 

Opening with the backdrop of “The Linda McCartney Retrospective,” the new series reflects the spirit of Tucson, McCartney’s photography and her love for music. The installation features eight live performances by eight local musicians each of whom have written an original song inspired by one of 250 archived images of the Southwest. These new, original songs will premiere during each artist’s set, scheduled every two weeks throughout the spring at CCP, beginning on March 1. 

All performances begin at 5:30p.
