The Pride of Arizona welcomes our incoming Wildcats in January 2021!

Classical guitarist Facundo Martinez shares his story of coming to the University of Arizona from his home country of Argentina and why he chose the School of Music and its renowned Bolton Guitar Studies program, where he is a graduate teaching assistant.

Led by professor Tom Patterson, the Bolton Guitar Studies program at the University of Arizona is one of the top guitar programs in the nation. Graduate and undergraduate students from around the world study and teach in Tucson, placing in some of the top U.S. and international competitions. The program hosts acclaimed artists David Russell, Sergio and Odair Assad as artists in residence who are able to provide concerts and master classes to our talented guitar majors.

University Community Chorus and University Singers are performing a Requiem setting by José Maurício Nunes Garcia, a 19th century Afro-Brazilian composer whose works are huge in scope but under-performed in the United States. This will be almost certainly the first time this work is performed in the western United States, and one of very few performances in the country. It will be a huge performance and a mix of undergraduates, graduate students, and community members making up about 120 singers, plus orchestral players from Tucson Symphony Orchestra, for a total of about 150 wonderful musicians on the Crowder stage.

The finalists of the Lois Trester Piano Competition reveal how they prepare to play in a competition and what goes through their minds while they perform.

As performance arts majors at the Fred Fox School of Music these students perform as part of their degree program and are awarded scholarships for their participation in the piano competition. Congratulations to the finalists.

Brian Lopez performs at the Center for Creative Photography to kick off “8-Track,” a new music series from Arizona Arts Live.

Lopez is an acclaimed singer/songwriter from Tucson, Arizona. A classically trained guitarist, Lopez has toured as a solo artist, with his psychedelic cumbia/rock band XIXA, and as a sideman for internationally renowned artists Calexico, KT Tunstall, Giant Sand, Orkesta Mendoza, Mexican Institute of Sound and more.

Opening with the backdrop of “The Linda McCartney Retrospective,” the new series reflects the spirit of Tucson, McCartney’s photography and her love for music. The installation features eight live performances by eight local musicians each of whom have written an original song inspired by one of 250 archived images of the Southwest. These new, original songs will premiere during each artist’s set, scheduled every two weeks throughout the spring at CCP, beginning on March 1.

All performances begin at 5:30p.
