Nhan Ho (MFA '24) shares insight into his time as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the School of Dance MFA program and the influences behind his thesis piece "Vessels" that was presented at the 2024 MFA Thesis Concert entitled "En/root".

The concert also included “Echoes of Kamathipura” by Jillian Peterson (MFA '24) and “Exposed Focus” by Ana Brotons (MFA '24). Each year the School of Dance thesis concert is held at the Stevie Eller Dance Theatre and features a showcase of works choreographed by MFA students.

"Hush" is a dance choreographed by University of Arizona School of Dance Assistant Director Tamara Dyke-Compton.

Dyke-Compton presented "Hush" at the 2023 Dumbo Dance Festival in Brooklyn, N.Y., The ensemble features several School of Dance alumni: Mae Lever, Hannah Wienmaster, Danielle Goodman, Nicole Miera, Cali Pool, Karsen Glatas, Vivianna DeSantiago, and Reed Neuser.

The concept was inspired by the “Me Too” movement and was originally presented in 2019 at the Stevie Eller Dance Theatre.

“In a world that doesn't award full-weight to the ideas, and contributions of women, “Hush” honors their worth, and calls upon all who see to listen. Paul Hamilton wrote an original composition for “Hush.” The piece was choreographed in silence and Paul's composition was in response to what he felt, after he viewed each new section of the choreography.”

University of Arizona School of Dance seniors Kennedy Frazier and Jack Haskins perform “Light Rain,” a masterwork choreographed by Gerald Arpino, at the 2023 College of Fine Arts Graduation Convocation on May 15 at Centennial Hall.

“It is presented today as an offering of hope for the bright future of all graduating students from the College of Fine Arts,” said Duane Cyrus, director of the School of Dance.

Jack Haskins (BFA ’23), who graduated from the University of Arizona School of Dance this past spring, shares his passion for dance and the arts and how he works to incorporate creativity and expression into his work with the environment and political action.

“There’s freedom here; it’s a privilege to go to the U of A.”

Haskins is a double major in Dance and PPEL (Philosophy, Politics, Economics and Law) with a minor in Climate Change and Society. He organized the inaugural “Earth Day in the Arts District” event at the Center for Creative Photography in 2023, partnering with Students for Sustainability, Wildcat Events Board and the College of Fine Arts. Haskins served as the ASUA CFA Senator for three years.

Selected as one of 11 films in the Pacific Northwest Ballet Dance Film Festival, “Authentically Me” is a film by MFA graduate student Gabriel Speiller from the University of Arizona School of Dance. Speiller produced the video in 2021 for his choreography class, shot in the Sonoran Desert in Tucson, and features fellow dance student Azelle Chang.
