Black History Month
February 1 – 28, 2025
The university will celebrate Black History Month throughout February with a diverse lineup of events to highlight the culture, contributions, creativity and legacy of the Black community.

Community Events
- (BE)LOVED Reception on Saturday, Feb 1, 6 – 9p at The Projects/Space, 197 E Toole Ave, Tucson, AZ. The exhibition will be available from Feb 1 to Mar 7 centering the lived experiences of five artists of African heritage — Alanna Airitam, Granville Caroll, Lizz Denneau, Amber Doe, and bianca goyette — consider Black love and connection.
- Getting to the Root opens Tuesday, Feb 4 at ASU’s Harry Wood Gallery, 900 S Forest Mall, Tempe, AZ creates a space for fostering deeper cultural understanding and dialogue as well as amplifying critical practices from artists, educators, and scholars about this subject matter. In doing so, the exhibition examines the social constructions and driving forces behind discussions of Black hair. Featuring CFA alums: Amber C. Coleman (’23), Olivia Richardson (’22), and Tehan Ketema (’22).
- 2025 Tucson Black Film Club Festival on Saturday, Feb 15, 11a – 4p at Dunbar Pavilion, 325 W 2nd St, Tucson, AZ. The Dunbar Pavilion African American Art & Culture Center features two films: Mudbound (2017) a “Southern Gothic” film about racial myths, hubris, and violent consequences at the end of World War II and Hollywood Shuffle (1987), a hilarious comedy focused on role-playing and success.
- Musical Instrument Museum’s Celebrate Hip Hop on Saturday, Feb 14 and Sunday, Feb 15, 9a – 5p at the Musical Instrument Museum 4725 E. Mayo Blvd., Phoenix, AZ 85050. Learn about the roots of hip hop through interactive DJ workshops, live break dancing, lectures, and more.
